GRWM – The Hidden Dangers of Viral Beauty Trend

Our morning ritual has truly evolved! While previous generations simply splashed water and applied a bit of moisturiser, today’s teenagers create elaborate skincare routines that often involve six products at a minimum, and sometimes even more than a dozen formulations before they start their day. This isn’t just about looking good; it’s a fascinating trend that’s reshaping our understanding of skincare while also posing some risks to young skin.

Recent research from Northwestern Medicine explores TikTok‘s beauty landscape and uncovers a surprising twist: even though skincare knowledge seems to be spreading widely through viral videos, the actual health of young skin is taking a hit. The findings from this study highlight some alarming realities about the adolescent wellness culture that’s gone a bit off track.

These popular skincare routines can create a perfect storm for the skin. When teens mix hydroxy acids with retinoids, and layer peptide complexes with vitamin C serums, they might not realise they’re essentially running dermatological experiments with their faces! Unfortunately, this can lead to issues like allergic contact dermatitis in users as young as seven, a sensitivity that could limit their skincare options for a lifetime.

What’s even more concerning is the psychological impact of these trends. Many videos subtly promote a preference for “lighter, brighter skin” and frame heavy investment in skincare as a mark of virtue. With these routines costing around £168 each month, they set incredibly high beauty standards that can shift the focus from healthy self-care to excessive consumption.
