Molecular Compass: Predicting Toxicity to Overcome Animal Testing

One of the groundbreaking methods to reduce animal testing recently gaining attention is the ‘Molecular Compass’ technology. This technology is an AI-based software that predicts the toxicity of chemical substances, serving as an innovative tool that can replace animal testing when evaluating the safety of chemicals. In particular, this system enables the reduction of animal testing in the drug development process and allows for faster and more accurate toxicity assessments. While traditional animal testing is time-consuming, expensive, and doesn’t guarantee accurate results for humans, the ‘Molecular Compass’ can overcome these limitations.

Furthermore, the FDA Modernization Act 2.0, passed by the U.S. Congress in 2024, no longer mandates animal testing for new drug development and allows the use of human physiology-based alternative technologies. This bill promotes drug development based on more human-centric data while reducing the sacrifice of experimental animals. In fact, technologies like ‘Organ-on-a-Chip’ are being widely adopted in the pharmaceutical industry and are becoming representative examples of alternatives to animal testing.

This technology has the potential to replace animal testing in various fields, not just in new drug development, but also in environmental toxicity assessments and safety tests for chemical substances. It is expected that technologies replacing animal testing will become more widespread through further research and legal support in the future.
