The European Union has taken a major step forward in advancing animal-free science by agreeing to ban animal testing for detergents and related cleaning products, effective from mid-2029. Under the revised Detergents Regulation, only scientifically validated non-animal methods will be permitted to assess product safety for human health and the environment.
For decades, safety testing of surfactants and household cleaning chemicals relied heavily on animal models – despite ethical concerns and known limitations in predicting human outcomes.
