Supporters of Animal Testing Alternatives

Recent survey findings by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) indicate that a majority of Americans agree on the need to “end animal testing and transition to alternative testing methods based on human biology.” Many respondents also felt that “animal testing has not made substantial contributions to human health,” with most emphasizing that “animal experimentation has limited impact on scientific progress, and existing alternative technologies could provide more effective and ethical methods.”

Research methods using human tissue and cell models are recognized as having the potential to overcome the scientific limitations of animal testing. This PCRM survey demonstrates growing awareness that alternatives to animal testing already exist and that adopting these alternative technologies could be more beneficial for human health.

Survey respondents evaluated alternative testing methods as more cost-effective than animal experimentation, and based on this, they urge the scientific community and government to pursue non-animal testing approaches. Using the survey results, PCRM advocates for legal, educational, and scientific approaches to replace animal testing, calling for minimizing animal experimentation and transitioning to more ethical and efficient research methods. These arguments are leading to expanded discussions about animal testing alternatives not only in the United States but globally.

Currently, many countries worldwide are actively moving to adopt non-animal testing methods, and PCRM is calling for strengthened cooperation between governments and research institutions to achieve this goal. This survey also clearly shows that we have reached a point where modernization of science and changes in ethical standards are necessary.
